“In running, it doesn’t matter whether you come in first, in the middle of the pack, or last. You can say, ‘I have finished.’ There is a lot of satisfaction in that.”
-Fred Lebow, New York City Marathon co-founder

… so the Austin Marthon, to do it or not to do it? February 20th 2011 was the date… the 6Soles had only been training roughly 30 days and leading up to the marathon I had run a total of 4600meters:  2.5miles!  My workouts consisted of heavy deads, squats, snatch balance and a week before the run I did 30 unbroken squats @ 155# (Monday) 30 unbroken squats @ 165# (Tuesday), then Wednesday the 17th of Feb we did our 2nd 6Soles workout:

30 squats @ 175# (unbroken),

10 rds of:

10 pullups/ 10burpees/ 10 squats,

 then 30 squats @ 135 (unbroken)

finished with a 1.5run:  36min

…. So Thursday rolled around and I still hadn’t decided to do the run yet! Finally, Saturday rolled around and I told Carey I was going to run but I needed some new shoes… headed to Lukes Locker and picked up some Saucony’s, wore them to a buddies house to break them in as much as possible before the run the next day.  Remember those shoes, they play a vital part in this ever growing Leadville story.

Running the Austin Marathon if completed would be the second longest run I have ever done…  I decided to start with the 4:20pace group, my goal was never to crush this run but to just move for 4+ hours.  The first 6-7 miles were gravy, but as I was approaching the 10 mile mark my legs started to cramp…. probably didn’t help that I drank my fair share of beer the day before… can’t blame me though, my buddy has this killer house with a pool and an outdoor bar with a tap!  Anyhow, as the miles started adding up my legs started hurting more then just cramps.. this is when it became mental!  Around mile 14, the course runs right by my house… I was SOOOOOOO close to quitting right there, HELL I did a half marathon on really zero run training.  About this time my wife and kids popped in my heads.. I knew they were somewhere around the 20mile marker, the new goal was to just make it to them and then I could stop.  As I made the turn up the street they were on I suddenly got this burst of energy and temporary relief of my legs… and then I spotted them, and that was all it took to for me to know that I was going to finish this run even if my legs fell off!  As I ran by them I stopped long enough to give them all a kiss, and all that was left was 6.2 miles to the finish…  4hrs 30minutes to run my first official Austin Marathon, on zero run training, brand new shoes, and horrible nutrition  during the run.  My first mental prep for Leadville was a success and would come in handy deep in the mountains of Colorado….

The Aftermath

21 Feb

…make that a large cup!

“Your training partner’s name is pain. You start out trying to ignore him. Can’t do it. You attempt to reason with him. No way. You try to strike a bargain. Hah. You plead. You say “Please stop, please go away. I promise never ever to do this again if you just leave me alone.” But he won’t. Pain only climbs off if you do. Then you’re beaten. “
– Scott Martin

Pain is inevitable.  Suffering is optional.

The above quotes basically sum up the Austin Marathon I completed yesterday.  For those of you who have never pushed through physical/ mental barriers YOU ARE NOT LIVING!  You are a shell of human being.  There is nothing better in life then seeing a wall and blowing that SHIT UP.  Because if you blow it up… it is no longer a wall, but if you avoid it, that wall ONLY GETS BIGGER!  I have said this before, but Nike has been spot on with at least one thing… JUST DO IT!

Run Yo ASS off…

19 Feb

It’s pretty wild the feeling I get just from the thought of running!  In the 10minutes it has taken me to put this blog post together, tears have been running down my cheeks the whole time.  Thinking of the athlete Pre was, his determination, grit, desire… very inspiring to me.  Running has always been a treat to me, and it’s not too often that I get to workout and have ME time for 3+ hours…  very cleansing.  Tomorrow will be my first Austin Marathon…  I initially said I would do the half.. but I’m a little crazy.
